Our Kenya Kieni coffee beans taste berry-sweet with notes of rhubarb, blackcurrant and elderberry.
The washed green coffee comes from the Kieni Factory, a washing station in Nyeri County, Kenya. It was established in 1985 by the Mugaga Farmers Cooperative Society. The coffee plants from this lot are grown on the foothills of the extinct volcano Mount Kenya, in an area characterized by its bright red, nutrient-rich volcanic soil, high altitude, and cool climate.
Most farmers in Nyeri are members of smallholder cooperatives with an average farm size of just half a hectare. They cultivate bananas, corn, macadamia nuts, avocados, and vegetables alongside coffee. The beans for our coffee are grown in the region around the Washing Station, which is located at an altitude of approximately 1,800 meters. After the farmers harvest their coffee cherries of the SL-28, Batian, Ruiru 11, and SL-34 varieties and bring them to the station, they are washed, sorted, and dried there. The green coffee comes to us via Plotcoffee.
